Joseph Calleja visited the BBC studios in London and the Andrew Marr show on 26 June, where he performed live on air. The Maltese tenor sang the aria “E lucevan le stelle” from Puccini’s opera “Tosca.” Calleja described Puccini as his desert island composer because of the human soul in the composer, saying Puccini knew which heart strings to pluck at the right moment.
Calleja spoke of his early introduction to opera and how his British aunt (from Scunthorpe) had talked him into joining a choir.
Calleja is one of the most eagerly anticipated artists to visit the BBC Proms this summer where Calleja will perform in Verdi’s monumental Requiem. Calleja is set to take stage in the Royal Albert Hall on 24 July with soprano Marina Poplavskaya, mezzo Mariana Pentcheva and the eminent Italian bass Ferruccio Furlanetto. Semyon Bychkov conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the massive choir is comprised of the BBC Symphony Chorus, the BBC National Chorus of Wales and the London Philharmonic Choir.
Joseph Calleja sang in the Verdi Requiem last time at the BBC Proms in August 2008.
